The victim was identified as Riyas, a resident of Coorg in Karnataka. He was sleeping in a room close to the Madrassa where he worked when the gang brutally attacked him. The men created terror in the premises when people living close by tried to come out of their rooms to help the young man.

Riyas had breathed his last before the local people could reach the spot. The dead body was taken to Pariyaram Medical College for postmortem.

N A Nellikkunnu MLA visited the Madrassa and alleged that the murder was a deliberate attempt to create communal unrest in the sensitive district. Indian Union Muslim League called for a hartal in Kasargod assembly constituency area on Tuesday.
