Kerala youths end suicide stir

Seven youths, who kept the police and public on tenterhooks for 28 hours threatening to commit suicide, withdrew their strike after the government promised to take necessary measures to solve their issue. The youths along with two others started their strike on Monday in protest against the delay in the appointment to reserve police despite their names figuring in the rank list six years ago. Their names had appeared in the rank list for the India Reserve Battalion commando post.

Two of them had climbed atop a huge tree in front of Kerala government secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram, while five of them went up the five-storied building of  Kerala State Co-operative Agricultural & Rural Development Bank Ltd on the opposite side. The youngsters atop the tree came down after few hours as the Chief Minister and officials of Home Department interfered, but those who were on top of the building continued their agitation. They said they were not satisfied with the response of the government.

Though the Chief Minister and Home Secretary tried to pacify the youth, they were adamant and demanded written assurance about the appointment. It was after 28 hours that the government approached the striking youngsters again, and they decided to come down.

"We want the government to create posts for our appointment or to give placement in any other post. The government has promised to consider this and give us job appointment. It is based on this promise that we ended our strike," Gopikrishnan, a youth said.

"The government has also promised not to take any case against the youth," Sanil, another person said.

The candidates also ended the indefinite strike, which was being observed for past seven days, before the secretariat.
