'We are also human': Kerala MLA defends snoozing colleagues

Kerala trolls its snoozing legislators

Social media was flooded with memes of MLAs sleeping in the Assembly as the Governor was addressing the opening session of 14th Assembly of Kerala.

It was after various newspapers had published pictures of MLAs dozing off in the House that social media trolls began to post in earnest. The joke soon spread like wildfire. In a report in the Deccan Chronicle, pictures showed former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, former education minister P K Abdu Rubb, Eldhose Kunnappilly, Anil Akkara, KC Joseph and Roshy Augustine snoozing.

Metrovartha, a local daily, also published pictures of a snoozing MLA Eldhose Kunnappilly, and MLA VT Balram trying to wake him up.

Opposition MLA Balram came up with an explanation on Facebook:
"Legislators often travel overnight by train or car to reach capital city after attending day long functions in their respective constituencies. Assembly begins at 8.30 AM. It is only human to doze of owing to tiredness. Eldhose Kunnappilly, sitting next to me, was complaining about a headache from the time he arrived at the Assembly. Governor's speech lasted for more than two-and-half hours, and legislators had nothing to do other than to sit there and listen to it. There is no need to make fun of a person simply because he dozed off in between," the MLA posted on his Facebook page.

"If this had happened to me Sanghi's (those favouring Hinduism) and comrades would have celebrated the same forever. They would post my picture every time they criticise me for anything," he further said.
