Kerala ranks high in unemployment: survey
- Tripura has highest unemployment rate, 19.7% followed by Sikkim, 18.1%
- Unemployment rate in the country reached a five-year high of 5%
- Kerala provides more casual labour employment, 43.8%, just after Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu
Kerala, which boasts of 100% literacy is also high on the unemployment rate, the Economic Survey has revealed. The survey which considered the level of unemployment of people above 15-years-age found Kerala under the third position during  Financial Year 2016.Â

The survey also found that India's unemployment rate reached a five-year high of 5% in 2015-16. The unemployment rate among women is 8.7% as compared to 4.3% among men. Figures released by Labour Bureau about 77% households in the country does not include a single member with a regular salary.Â

Among states, Tripura has the highest unemployment rate, 19.7%, followed by Sikkim, 18.1% and Kerala, 12.5% while the national unemployment rate is 5%. Lakshadweep tops the list of Union Territories with 16.1% followed by Andaman and Nicobar Islands, 12.7%.Â

However, Kerala shares the number with West Bengal when it comes to casual labour employment, 43.8%, while Andhra Pradesh has the highest number of workers engaged, 48.5%, followed by Tamil Nadu, 47.3%.Â

Kerala also comes second in the list of households with no earning member, 13.2%, just after Lakshadweep, 13.8%.Â

The survey was conducted among 21,283 persons from 4, 655 houses in the state.Â
