Kerala priests rant against jeans wearing women viral

A video grab showing Catholic priest Father Sharlom, from Kerala, insulting women wearing jeans and shirts, has gone viral on social media. The priest says that such women should be drowned in the sea.

The video, aired by 'Shalom TV', a Christian devotional channel, was uploaded on Youtube 11 months ago. A Facebook user posted the video on her wall on February 25, and it is now going viral.

In the video, the priest can be heard saying that Bible does not permit girls to wear jeans and shirts. His office said the video was uploaded by someone with vested interests and it is part of a one-year-old programme. They also said that the video is an edited version of the speech.

In the video, Father Sharlom can be heard saying that he do not feel like leading mass which is attended by girls wearing jeans and t-shirt. "I do not feel like going to churches where girls come wearing jeans or pants and shirts and T-shirts. Often they will have a mobile phone and kerchief in their hands. My question is who gave you the permission to wear such attires? Does Catholic Church permit you or does the Holy Bible gives you such right? The Bible says that men should not wear the clothes of girls and vice versa. By doing so they are disregarding God," the priest said.

He also said that many boys, who attend conventions and classes, have told him that women dress up in a provocative manner to persuade them to commit sin. "Girls, who dress up in provocative manner should be drowned in the sea by attaching a stone to their neck," Father Sharlom said adding that girls who attend church wearing skimpy clothes would be cursed instead of getting the blessings of the God.

He goes on to talk about a man who came to church for counselling, after impregnating his sister. "When I asked him why he committed the sin he shared his sorrow with me. He told me that after their parents left for work, only him and his sister would be there at home. The girl would roam around in the house wearing a shorts and tee, and this prompted him," Father Sharlom said.

The Father also says that women altered churidar after Satan enters them. After sinning, they come to me saying they are not getting a job or is not getting married. It felt awkward to see a girl wearing a revealing attire which was brought by her mother. Will girls who provoke father and brother wearing such revealing attires be welcomes by the God when they visit the church?" the priest asks.

Many persons have come out heavily against the speech on social media. Former Rajya Sabha member and senior CPM leader T N Seema said such statements come from individuals with distorted conscience and values and they are actually insulting their own religion. Such persons use the cover of religious protection to escape the clutches of law, she said.
