State Intelligence Chief Warns of hooch tragedy

Kerala liquor policy Hooch tragedy warned

Kerala State Intelligence has warned that the Abkari lobby in the state may instigate hooch tragedy to subvert the liquor policy that proposes prohibition in 10 years.

in a confidential report to the government , State Intelligence DGP A Hemachandran warned against a possible attempt to trigger a hooch tragedy. The Abkari lobby is not happy about the liqour policy that proposed liquor ban in a phased manner. More than 700 liquor bars had closed shop as per the policy.

Besides this, the manifestos of the ruling United Democratic Front (LDF) and the Left Democratic front (LDF) agree on one point, that the availability of alcohol should be restricted. While the UDF pledges that it will declare prohibition, the LDF is proposing abstinence as a way out.

Finding that both fronts are politically pressurized to take a stand against liquor, the Abkari lobby have lost all hopes and might go to any extreme to prove that restricting availability of liquor or a blanket ban will have an adverse effect, the DGP warned.

The Intelligence Chief also suspected that the liqour lobby might get help from corrupt officials in the Excise and the Police departments. He also laid out a plan to ensure vigil to check the flow of spurious liquor.
