Kerala Congress against Congress

Amid strong rumours that the Kerala Congress (M) is weighing the pros and cons of a break up with the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala, the party mouthpiece has hit hard at the national party for allegedly plotting against its leader. The Congress was behind the conspiracy against Kerala Congress leader KM Mani that eventually forced him to resign from the Oommen Chandy ministry, it alleged.

Prathichaya, the Kerala Congress mouthpiece said that the plot against Mani, the veteran leader of the party, was meant to spoil his chances of becoming the Chief Minister of Kerala.

Drawing parallels between the ouster of PT Chacko, former Congress leader who had an unceremonious exit from the Congress ministry led by R Shankar in 1964, the party newspaper said that the history was repeating itself in the case of Mani.

Chacko, a towering personality in Kerala politics, had to resign as the Home Minister in the Shankar's cabinet following allegations that he was accompanied by an 'unknown lady' in his official car. The publication said that the conspiracy against Chacko was hatched by the Congress as it suspected that the influential young leader might be a strong contender for Chief Minister’s post. After his resignation, Chacko left politics and died heartbroken a few months later. His death led to the formation of the Kerala Congress in 1964, and consolidated its influence among a predominantly Christian community.

Just as in the case of Chacko, a bar hotel owner appeared from nowhere, raising bribe allegations against Mani during the previous UDF ministry, the party mouthpiece alleged. The party publication made the scathing attack on the Congress at a time when the party high command initiated efforts to appease Kerala Congress, the third largest partner in the UDF. It also alleged that some Congress leaders tried to defeat Mani in the Assembly elections.
