Karnataka village uses WhatsApp messaging to solve civic problems

Karnataka village adopts new ways to solve civic problems

A tiny village in the coastal belt of Dakshina Kannada has moved in the direction to adopt to tech-savvy ways to redress their grievances.

The Golithottu village panchayat officials in Puttur taluk offer door to door assistance to the villagers and give them necessary information about government schemes and facilities.

Every household in the village owns an Andriod phone and is part of a WhatsApp group formed by Panchayat development officer (PDO) Tirupati Tippara who addresses the problems faced by the villagers.

“We have a separate WhatsApp group  for the PDOs. I share information which is relevant to the villagers on the group. We are also intending to include panchayat presidents' itinerary and their expenses too,” said Tippara.

With the help of the WhatsApp group created, 1800 villagers who have access to the messaging app receive orders and circulars of various state and central government schemes.

“Sitting at home we now know about the proceedings of the village panchayath. We have access to all the necessary information,” said one of the villagers Umar.

“This facility is a blessing for the villagers who can now present their grievances without visiting the panchayat office or stand in long queues,” said panchayat president Shalini.
