This may be a personal family matter, but the implications of it affect the women of the entire country. On January 2, 2017 State Planning Board Deputy Chairman, CM Ibrahim’s 20-year-old daughter was admitted to the hospital as she was suffering from severe stomach ache. Iffa, his daughter, was also pregnant and had suffered from an abortion. The foetus was still half within the mother’s body.

Now in an interview to Suvarna News, Iffa broken and shattered by the event has revealed what really happened that day. She says, “On 2nd January early morning I was given food and juice. At 3pm I even had lunch. First around 12.30pm, I felt a terrible stomach pain. I went to the nearby hospital and then came back. Again at 4pm, after lunch, the pain began and I started bleeding.”

Iffa has alleged that her condition must have been brought about by the food she was given at home and she also insisted that she never had anything on her own. “The doctors told me specifically that something had been consumed and I did not consume anything on my own. I was staying at home and surely something wrong was given to me.”

In clear-cut words, Iffa has blamed her parents for her present condition. She says, “I didn’t know that my father will use his influence to this extent. My whole family was against this marriage. Many times my brother has assaulted my husband for marrying me. They were trying in every way to break this marriage. My final words are, my father and my mother are responsible for my abortion.”

It is terribly tragic that the couple is stuck in rules and legal tangles and are not even able to grieve for their dead child.

Iffa’s troubles have not ended. She is still waiting to be handed over the foetus by the police. While doctors have said that there is no investigation to be conducted on the foetus, there is a delay in the bereaved family receiving it. The couple want to cremate the foetus according to the Islamic tradition. It is terribly tragic that the couple is stuck in rules and legal tangles and are not even able to grieve for their dead child.

Iffa was admitted to Vikram Hospital. Iffa while speaking to TOI  narrated the precarious condition she had been at that time. She narrated how half the foetus had been expelled from her body with the umbilical cord still intact. Her mother, brother and sister rushed her to the hospital.

The worried mother-to-be asked her family to inform her husband of the complications, however, the family is alleged to have conveniently ignored that. Despite this, her husband Mohammed Faizal, son of Ibrahim’s young brother CM Khader came to know of it and reached the hospital.

On 22 December last year, when Faizal went to Ibrahim's house, Faizal was tied and beaten up with a hockey stick, tortured and warned against returning to meet Iffa.

On his arrival, Faizal got the shattering news that the foetus had been aborted. Iffa says in her interview to Suvarna that until January 2 she had felt no such complications and she was perfectly fine. She had been living with her parents since December 22, however, her family has denied this and said that she came to them when she began feeling unwell on that day.

Not surprisingly, even the doctors refused to tell her the reason why this happened, and why her foetus was aborted in the 15th week of her pregnancy.

A report in Deccan Herald mentions how Iffa’s in-laws claimed that Faiz, Iffa’s brother, was against his sister’s marriage to Khader’s son as he wanted to her to marry someone who matched their economic status. However, Iffa went against the family and opted for a registered marriage with Khader’s son.

Iffa is now home and she was discharged from Vikram Hospital once the matter gained attention. The doctors probably feared a backlash on their hospital or may be were forced to do so, on behest of CM Ibrahim.

CM Khader filed a complaint with the Cubbon Park police in Bengaluru, alleging that his daughter-in-law was fed with juice laced with some medicine to facilitate a miscarriage. Khader in his four-page complaint has also alleged that on 22 December last year, when Faizal went to Ibrahim's house, Faizal was tied and beaten up with a hockey stick, tortured and warned against returning to meet Iffa. He has also named two gynaecologists for forcibly terminating Iffa's pregnancy without her husband’s consent.

The hospital maintains that rules do not make it mandatory to obtain the husband’s consent before operating on the wife. They went ahead with the procedure, as it was consented to by the patient, her mother and her sister.

So Iffa is still to get to the bottom of this and she hopes the police investigation will help her with answers. However, that is still a long way off.

Like in a hindi film, the background to this tragic case stems from parental disapproval.
