Karnataka gets four more smart cities

As part of PM Modi’s pet project, the Centre has selected four more cities from Shivamogga, Tumakuru, Mangaluru and Hubballi-Dharwad from Karnataka to be developed as smart cities.

The Centre has selected a total of 27 tier two cities. With the new list, the number of total cities under smart city mission has gone up to 60.

The 27 smart cities announced on the new list are from 12 states including five from Maharashtra, four each from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, three from Uttar Pradesh and two each from Punjab and Rajasthan. Nagaland and Sikkim have also found a place in the list.

The Centre will provide ₹1,44,742 crore to develop the towns mentioned under the list as smart cities with all amenities.

Amritsar, known as the city of temples has found the top place in Centre’s smart cities list.

Karnataka’s Mangaluru is named in the sixth place, Tumakuru has appeared in the 15th place, Shivamogga is in the 20th position and Hubballi-Dharwad are in the 25th place in the new list.

Currently, Tumakuru, Mangaluru, Shivamogga, Hubballi-Dharwad are known and tier-two cities. Though these cities have good infrastructure, it is not sufficient to attract big companies. People still will have to travel to different places to get various facilities and services.

The Smart city plan contains a wish list of infrastructure and services that describes his or her level of aspiration.

To provide for the aspirations and needs of the citizens, urban planners ideally aim at developing the entire urban eco-system, which is represented by the four pillars of comprehensive development-institutional, physical, social and economic infrastructure.

This can be a long term goal and cities can work towards developing such comprehensive infrastructure incrementally, adding on layers of ‘smartness’.

Apart from these, pilgrim and tourist cities Ujjain, Tirupati, Agra, Nashik, Madurai, Thanjavur, Ajmer, Varanasi are also on the list.
