Karnataka Cop Suicide: Bullied officer attempts to kill herself

After DySP Kallappa Handibagh and MK Ganapathy, another police officer tried to commit suicide yesterday.

Roopa Tambada (34), PSI at Vijayanagar Police station in Bengaluru attempted to end her life by taking dozens of paracetamol tablets. The lady officer tried to commit suicide at her residence at around 2.30 pm.

The incident came to light when her husband arrived at around 4.00 pm after she was unreachable. She was taken to a city Hospital. Doctors have kept her in ICU for observation. Roopa is responding to the treatment and her blood samples have been sent to Hyderabad for further tests.

Although the motive of her suicide is not clear but preliminary report suggests it might be another case of bullying by senior that drove her to take such an extreme step.

Tambada, a Police Sub Inspector (PSI) of 2010 batch, had a spat with her senior officer over confiscated items from a criminal Talpad Navgaon yesterday. Navgaon went back to the police station to get back his belongings including a mobile after getting a bail.

At that time Roopa had told him that his belongings are either with Inspector Sanjeev Gowda or with ACP SK Umesh. Sanjeev Gowda, who was present there, shouted and warned her not to use his name. Gowda accused the lady inspector of using a phone similar to that of Navgaon’s.

Those present at the Vijayanagar police station said that the two officers shouted at each other.

Roopa, according to her husband, wanted to file a complaint with the Police Deputy Commissioner against Gowda. Roopa before leaving had allegedly threatened that she would file a complain against Gowda with her senior officer.

However Roopa did not file a complaint, she instead bought paracetamol tablets and went home. After reaching home she switched off her mobile phone and took the tablets.

“She was sharing her problems with me....But we don’t know what compelled her to take the extreme step”, Roopa’s mother Shanthamma said.

Senior officials have visited her at the hospital. The Rajajinagar police has filed a case and are investigating.
