This may sound bizarre, but getting the donkeys married was not as simple as it sounds.

The entire village of Betagiri in Karnataka gathered to hold a proper wedding for a pair of donkeys as a ritual to appease the rain gods.

The nuptials were conducted with much fanfare and detailed rituals.

As the donkeys were being wedded, the residents prayed to the rain gods by touching the feet of the animals. Married women gathered and performed an 'arathi' to the couple.

While the male donkey was made to wear a special head gear, the female was bedecked in a saree and a mangalsutra (taali).

The marriage ceremony concluded with a procession, with the newly weds escorted around the village.

Despite the onset of monsoon, Betageri has not received any rainfall this year. Residents hope this union of asses will bring them some.
