Jisha murder: Key suspect in police net

The Kerala Police have nabbed a man, suspected to be the prime culprit in the brutal murder of Dalit law student at Perumbavoor on Thursday. He was taken into custody from Kannur on Tuesday, according to police sources.

The police team is grilling the suspect in a secret place in Thrissur, sources informed. But the special investigation team that probes the murder is yet to confirm the reports.

The suspect was picked up from a hotel in Kannur where he joined as a kitchen help two days back. Reports state that the man in custody is a neighbour of Jisha, who was raped and murdered at her house. As many as seven persons are in police custody in connection with the murder that elicited a sharp response in the state and triggered spontaneous protest marches.

After visiting the mother of the victim, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy assured that the culprit will be brought to justice soon. The government will consider providing a government job to Jisha's sister. But the decision will have to be cleared by the Election Commission, he said. The Chief Minister also cautioned against attributing 'other dimensions' to the incident, an apparent reference to the attempts to politicise the murder.

The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) tried to block Chief Minister's vehicle when he reached Perumbavoor to meet the mother of Jisha. Yesterday, youth brigade of the Communist Party of India had blocked Ramesh Chennithala from visiting the victim's mother.
