Jilted lover sets girl on fire, attempts suicide

In a shocking incident, a medical student suffered serious burn injuries after a youth set her ablaze for allegedly rejecting his proposal. The youth also attempted suicide by setting himself on fire. 
 

The incident took place at School of Medical Education (SME), Kottayam. The victim, Lakshmi, hailing from Haripad, a fourth-year physiotherapy student was admitted to Government Medical College Hospital, Kottayam, with 60% burn injuries. 
 

The accused Adarsh, a native of Neendakara, Kollam, was a former student of the same college. He is also admitted to the same hospital with 75% burn injuries. 
 

According to an eye witness, the duo was in love for some time, and the girl backed out after her parents opposed their relationship. After this, the accused had on several occasions threatened and stalked the girl. 
 

 Police said the 2013 batch student came to college to enquire on the supplementary exam. By 11 am he went to her classroom and requested her to come out. The girl allegedly turned down his request. 
 

Infuriated by the rejection, Adarsh barged into the classroom with a bottle of petrol, hugged the girl and poured the fuel on her. However, Lakshmi tried to flee, but he caught hold of her near the library and forcefully hugged her set them both on fire. 
 

Two students who tried to save Lakshmi from attack also suffered injuries and are admitted to hospital. 
 

Police have registered a case in connection with the incident.
