Income tax raid in offices of Gokulam Chit Funds

The Income Tax Department launched raids at about 80 locations of Chennai-based financial institutions of Gokulam Group in connection with a tax evasion case. Searches were conducted in the offices of Gokulam Chit Fund company and its associates at about 43 locations in Tamil Nadu, 29 in Kerala and six in Karnataka, apart from few others.

The income tax officials also raided the house of Gokulam Gopalan, the managing director or Gokulam Chits. The officials said that the department was acting on the basis of some vital inputs that black money is being stashed and generated by the chit fund.

It is not clear whether the move has any connection to recent raids conducted on the premises belonging to politicians and their associates in Tamil Nadu.

The department had conducted multiple searches and raids on the premises belonging to Tamil Nadu Health Minister C Vijayabhaskar and others, before April 12 by polls at R K Nagar Assembly Constituency after reports that the politician used the illegal money to influence polls.
