Idukki district collector has ordered demolition of the resort built by encroaching dam reservoir at Anchuruli.

The order comes in the wake of media reports on the blatant violation of rules and norms. But before the Revenue officials opened their eyes towards the illegal construction, the private company had managed to build a multi- storied building along with two small building. The ground floor of the resort is built so close to the highest water level of the reservoir that one could touch the water from there.

The demolition order was given after reports that the resort under construction violated rules and encroached into dam reservoir. The local village officer inquired into the allegations of encroachment gave a report to the District Collector pointing out that the resort violated the existing rules. Dam safety norms stipulate that no construction should be allowed within 15 metres from the maximum capacity of the reservoir.

The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), the custodian of the dam and the surrounding areas of the reservoir, had apparently winked at the naked violation of rules and encroachment into the protected area.  Besides, the KSEB ensured power supply to the resort by pulling an 11 KV power line.
