Hubballi has the only unit manufacturing Indian flags

Its 70th Independence Day and people are happily waving flags all over India. Most of the flags you see are manufactured at Hubballi in Karnataka.

Every year the flags had to be of 4x6 measure. But this time, permission has been given to design longer flags maximum being 14x21. The largest flag is being sold at ₹25,000.

These flags are made of pure cotton cloth and raw material for this being brought from Bagalakote and Dharwad districts.

The flag manufacturing unit in Hubballi is looked after by the Karnataka Khadi Gramodyog Samyukta Sangha (KKGSS). The unit was started in 2004 and in last four years, it has sold more than 5 crore flags.

The government has directed all the gram and Zilla Panchayats to change the flag every three or four months. This change is mandatory, says the rule. So, each village or district has to buy at least three flags a year, said KKGSS Secretary, BS Hiremath.

Khadi and Village Industries Commission has certified KKGSS as the only manufacturer and supplier of the Indian flag to the entire country.

The Bengeri unit has 100 specialist spinners and 100 weavers. The flag is manufactured according to the standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards.
