Devanuru Mahadeva, renowned writer and central sahitya academy winner, has said that Kambala is not only a fun game, it is also a ritual practiced since centuries. He has said that this ritual abuses dalits and lower castes.

 

“There is a ritual in Kambala called ‘Pani Kullunu, in which the Koraga person stays in the silt ground along with his wife and children on the previous night of the kambala festival and sees that competitors of other villages will not intrude and destroy the silt ground.

Thus he has suggested the government to retain Kambala as a game but he has urged the ban of Kambala as a ritual. HS Doreswamy, another renowned senior citizen and freedom fighter also has opposed Kambala. He has compared Kambala to gambling. He has said that the bulls are tortured for the delight and pleasure of common man.

 

“Those who have sense do not support and encourage this game” Doreswamy said.


However many pro-Kannada organisations have staged protest in support of Kambala, even Tamil organizations and Karnataka wing of AIADMK also have decided to stage protest near Mourya circle.

 

Hamsalekha, renowned music composer, has taken a totally different stand. He has asked Kannadigas to focus more on protecting environment and planting trees than involving in this kind of protests.
