Harassed by pigs, Karnataka villagers launch 'Operation Varaha'

Harassed by pigs, K'Taka's villagers launch 'Operation Varaha'

After a long wait of months, ' Operation Varaha' has been launched in response to the demands of Honnali village in Karnataka, which seems to be overwhelmed by pigs.

Pig-rearing centres have mushroomed in Tungabhadra Layout in Honnali and the four-legged porkers have perturbed the residents greatly. It would appear the owners were not too concerned about keeping the pigs penned.

Currently, the situation in the village is such that one can find sows swarming over roads, empty sites and even the compounds of houses. Some of the animals have even had died after falling into drains, giving rise to fears of disease.

Town panchayat chief officer SR Veerabhadraiah had even issued notices to the owners of these centres, highlighting the inconvenience to the public. They were asked to shift the pigs to a remote location away from residential areas.

But owners did not take such steps, said officer Veerabhadraiah.

Keeping all this in mind, the authorities decided to go the whole hog and launched ‘Operation Boar'. A team of experts have been tasked with catching the grunters and shifting them to a pre-selected location at a distance from the village.
