Bengaluru’s Old HAL Airport may reopen

FollowHAL airport, city's sole domestic and international airport for decades, was shut down in 2008 after the establishment of Kempegowda International Air Port (KIA) in Devanahalli.
HAL was closed as there was a legal contract between government of India and the Bangalore International Airport (BIAL), which stated there cannot be a commercial airport operating in the zone of 150 km for the next 25 years. Hence, the HAL airport was not listed by the Ministry when the regional connectivity policy was announced.
Now Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd has said that the HAL Airport will be opened for domestic and commercial operations within a few months. The company has appealed to the Civil Aviation Ministry to include it in the list for regional connectivity.
Suvarna Raju Chairman and MD of HAL, in a press meet, told that HAL is likely to open as soon as it obtains approval from the Centre. KIA has achieved the passenger traffic projected for 2020. It is estimated that by 2020 the passenger traffic would double.
