The brazen attack by has once again kicked up a big debate on public display of affection, leaving the Left in confusion as it exposed the selective anti-moral policing activism by the CPM. 

 

 A public forum of like-minded citizens was quick to announce the second edition of 'Kiss of Love', a public protest in which men, women and sexual minorities freely mingled and kissed in public, issuing an open challenge to the moral brigade. But the CPM, which came out against Shiv Sena's moral policing was a bit reluctant to take things that 'far.' It chose a protest called 'Love sit-in' (Sneha Iruppu).

CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, indirectly justified the moral brigade while criticising the Kiss of Love protests. "The mode of protests against moral policing must have the stamp of approval from the society," he said. "You should think whether people at your home approve Kiss of Love," Balakrishnan added.

When the Kiss of Love protest was first staged at Kochi in 2014, Pinarayi Vijayan, the then CPM state secretary had severely criticised it. "Things done inside doors should not be displayed in public," he had stated then.

The DYFI and SFI, two CPM feeder organisations, did not want to hurt the 'hurt' the society while taking out their protest against moral policing by the Shiv Sena.

But what they conveniently forgot was that the government, the CPM and its student's wing SFI were soft on the moral policing by SFI in University College in Thiruvananthapuram and Kalady Sree Sankara Sanskrit University recently. Three youths including two girls were manhandled and their male friend cruelly beaten by SFI activists inside the college. The SFI alleged that the students were engaged in 'immoral' activity inside a classroom. When the victims stood strong and filed a case, they had to face a concerted smear campaign against the victims.

Recently a Young man and former student of Kalady University were attacked allegedly by SFI inside the campus. Though the victims filed complaints, the police are yet to arrest the culprits. Janyugam, the mouthpiece of the CPI, an LDF partner, blamed the police for its reluctance to arrest 13 SFI activists involved in the University College incident.
