Gauri Lankesh is arrested

Hubballi police have arrested tabloid journalist Gauri Lankesh today and have produced her before 2nd JMFC Court of Hubballi. The court had earlier served two notices, asking her to appear before the court for trial. But since she ignored the notices, the court issued an arrest warrant.

The warrant is for a defamation case filed against her in 2008 by Prahlad Joshi and Umesh Joshi. The  complaint was filed in Keshavapura Police Station, Hubballi.

In an article published in 2008, Gauri had termed BJP leaders as 'pirates'. Besides, she frequently criticised BJP leaders in her tabloid. Her strong, and at times inflammatory, anti-BJP stance has led to intense rancour against her among right-wing circles.

Later, the Court released Gauri on conditional bail. The Court has ordered her to attend to the next hearing on October 5.

Here is a sample of her writings. The below is a screenshot of a Facebook post she made in November 2015, as a retort to this DNA article.
