Three youths drown in flash floods in Kerala, three missing

Massive rescue operations are on in Kadavanthrapuzha River in Kuttyady, 50 km from the northern district of Kerala, after three youths were drowned and three went missing in a flash flood on Sunday afternoon. A relatively calm river suddenly swelled in the heavy rains. Nine youths, who where bathing in the river were washed away by the strong currents at around 4 pm on Sunday. Three managed to escape, but six men were swept away in the flash flood.

 

Local people and Fire and Rescue personnel rushed to the spot and started rescue operations.  Two dead bodies were recovered hours after the tragedy on Sunday night and another one on Monday morning, more than one km downstream. The deceased are identified as Rajeesh, son of Parakkal Ramakrishnan and Shine, 19, a resident of Kunnummal in Kozhikode. One of the deceased is yet to be identified. Torrential rains and strong currents are hampering the rescue operations. 

 

The nine-member group were taking a bath in the river near Poozhythodu hydel project in Kuttyady. Initial reports say that the flash flood was resulted by a landslide in the forests upstream. 

 

Three state ministers rushed to Kuttyady on Sunday night to coordinate rescue operations.
