14th Kerala Assembly in session:New MLAs take oath

 The 14th Kerala Assembly began its first sitting with 140 newly elected legislator taking oath of office on Thursday morning.   Pro-tem Speaker S Sarma administered the oath.

 

 The swearing-in was held  in alphabetical order. Manjeshwaram MLA, P.B Abdul Razzak took oath in Kannada.

 

The day marks special relevance in the history of Kerala Assembly as it is for the first time Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member is elected to the Legislative Assembly and the party is all set to make it a gala affair. BJP opened account in Kerala Elections for the first time through O Rajagopal who was elected to the Assembly from Nemom in Thiruvananthapuram. 

 

Six-time legislator P C George and former Govt. Chief Whip, who managed a victory as an independent candidate,  also took oath. He is representing his home constituency Poonjar, where he defeated candidates of Left Democratic Front (LDF), United Democratic Front (UDF) and the National Democratic Alliance. 

 

The speaker of the 14th Assembly will be elected on Friday, the ruling LDF has named P. Sreeramakrishnan as its candidate while the Congress-led UDF is yet to announce their Speaker candidate. 
 

The Congress has selected Ramesh Chennithala as the Leader of the Oppostion. Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will be the chairman of the UDF.
