DySP Handibhag suicide: Month later, CID clueless about ransom

DySP Kallappa Handibhag committed suicide on July 4, after being accused of kidnapping Tejas Gowda, a local youth, for a ransom of ₹10 lakh.

The Karnataka CID, led by Inspector Yathiraj, is probing kidnap and suicide case and has so far arrested one of three accused - a certain Pradeep, who is a member of the Bajrang Dal State Committee.

Pradeep was made to undergo a medical test, was produced before the magistrate and has been taken into CID custody for four days. The accused Pradeep is a resident of Basavanahalli in Chikkamagaluru and is a close aide of Praveen Khandya - the prime accused.

The CID is currently trying to find the missing ₹10 lakh, which was allegedly paid to the now late DySP.

Based on a tapped mobile phone conversation, the CID has claimed that officer Handibhag might have given the cash to Pradeep, who later might have been given the money to Praveen Khandya, who is still missing.

In search of the cash, sleuths searched the canteen run by Pradeep and his house in Narayanapur Layout, Bengaluru. But neither could they find the money, nor did they gain any clues regarding its whereabouts.

Police also have searched Handibhag’s relative’s house, where he committed suicide. But the search failed to find anything.

For now, the CID is headed to Chikkamagaluru for another week. The mystery of the money remains unsolved.
