Even after Dr Richard Beale clarified that Jayalalithaa died of multi-organ failure, there are many questions unanswered, and in fact, the mystery around Jayalalithaa’s death has deepened as he suddenly decided to appear before the media to speak about the Jaya’s days in the hospital and her fatal death.

People of Tamil Nadu have been demanding answers on why no one is being allowed to meet Jayalalithaa –not even the party members nor her relatives- after she was admitted to the Apollo Hospital in Chennai on September 22, last year. It was said that she was suffering from fever and dehydration.

Since then, no one has seen her except for Sasikala. Though Apollo released some letters saying Jayalalithaa was improving and will be discharged, at least thrice before her death, she continued to be in the hospital, and no one was allowed to see or meet her.

All this time, only Sasikala was with Jayalalithaa and not even her photograph was released, despite people thronging the hospital and praying for her health. However, on December 5 it was declared that Jayalalithaa has had a heart attack and is no more. So, no one has a clue what happened between September 22 and December 5.

The things which made her death a mystery include a letter supposedly sent by Jayalalithaa with her thumb impression on October 29. However the doctors press release stated "Since the signatory has undergone Tracheotomy recently and has an inflamed right hand, she is temporarily unable to affix her signature."

Even then, Dr Belae did not come out and address the media on what had happened to Jayalalithaa. Even a Supreme Court judge advised that the Supreme Court should investigate Jayalalithaa’s mysterious death. People seconded his point but no action was taken in this regard too.

On the day of Jayalalithaa’s burial, the Mannargudi gang including Sasikala’s husband Natarajan who were thrown out of the house by Jaya were surrounding her body. This led to many speculations on Sasikala’s relationship to the Mannargudi gang. However, later, pushing all these allegations to a side, she was successful in becoming the chief of the AIADMK party.

However, Sasikala looked worried when a report that Jayalalithaa was on wrong medication broke out. But as usual Sasikala remained mum on it and the no one was discussing the issue after some days.

Meanwhile, conspiracy theories that Jayalalithaa had died much before December 5, started floating. But Sasikala kept crying in the public meetings, paid respect to MGR and Jayalalithaa’s graves and kept mum on all these matters.

This has been one of the causes why people can’t trust Sasikala. In December 2011, there were trust issues between Jayalalithaa and Sasikala, where the latter’s family members (Mannargudi gang) who were living in her Poes Garden house was accused of trying to poison Jayalalithaa. Following a medical test, Jayalalithaa cut relationship with Sasikala and her Mannargudi gang and threw them out of her house. But exactly in 100 days, Sasikala wrote a public apology letter and said she was innocent and did not know what her family members did.

Sasikala also said that she would cut all relationships with her family, including her husband Natarajan and wanted to live with Jayalalithaa. With this, Jayalalithaa took Sasikala back in her Poes Garden House.

Now, looks like the people have not forgotten what the Mannargudi family had done to Jayalalithaa and consider Sasikala very much the part of the family, even to this day. The entire family surrounding Jaya’s body during her funeral was an example to her closeness with the family.

With this background, Dr Beale’s press conference just before a day of Sasikala’s swearing in has made people confused. What was the necessity of the doctor speaking out now?

Is Sasikala trying to prove that she is not involved in Jayalalithaa’s death and desperately want people to accept her? Sure, people of Tamil Nadu have proved time and again that they go by the Tamil emotions. But they have also shown that they will never forget if anyone has hurt their language, culture or the favourite leader.

Thus, it looks like Sasikala’s efforts to come clean are not having the desired impact. Though she climbs the Chief Minister’s chair, it will be a tough task to retain it after six months.
