An Ayurveda doctor who drank a medicine he prescribed to prove that it was safe, died after battling for life for nine years in  Kerala.

Dr P A Biju, 47, a government Ayurveda doctor from Payipra in Alappuzha passed away on Monday, nine years after he fell paralysed in January 2007 when the tragedy struck him in the form of poison in a medicinal brew.

On 25 January 2007, relatives of a patient approached Biju with the complaint that the woman fell unconscious after consuming 'Rasanapanchakam Kashayam', Ayurvedic medicine, he gave from the Government Ayurveda Clinic in Bisonvalley in Idukki where he was practicing as a doctor then. The men had brought the bottle of medicine with them. Biju was so sure that the drug was safe and drank it from the bottle to prove that.

But he was terribly wrong. The doctor swooned in front of the patient's relatives and lost consciousness forever. He never spoke since that fateful day in January.

Rushed to a hospital in Kothamangalam in Ernakulam, doctors detected poison in his blood. By then, the poison had affected his brain that left him completely paralysed. Many expert doctors tried their best to bring the young Ayurvedic doctor back to life in vain. He was declared brain-dead after a month.

Investigation proved that somebody had added a deadly pesticide used in the cardamom plantations in Idukki in the Ayurvedic medicine. Later, police arrested the husband of the woman patient of Bison Valley for poisoning the bottle of medicine to avenge a family feud. But the probe remained inconclusive.

Biju is survived by wife Dr Shincy and two children.
