The cell phone belonged to a rape accused and was a vital link for uncovering the truth of the conversation between PSI Roopa and inspector Sanjeev.

Sources said that the problem between the both started due to the mobile phone, and both argued bitterly over the phone. The sudden vanishing of such an important proof has led to speculations.

PSI Roopa had arrested a rape accused and had confiscated his mobile phone, and Inspector Sanjeev Gowda was under suspension in the rowdy Motu Mahesh murder case.

After completing the suspension term, Sanjeev returned to his duty on July 15. He asked Roopa to hand him over the phone of the accused to be presented before the court. Roopa answered saying she doesn’t have it, but it is with someone in the staff.

Angered by her answer, Sanjeev raised his voice and said, “You were dealing with the case. So you should have the things seized,” and ordered her to give him the phone, said sources.

The station staff said, she was deeply hurt by this behaviour and might have consumed sleeping pills.

Currently, Roopa is recovering but still has not been discharged from the hospital.

Doctor Shashikumar said that there are chances of her liver being damaged due to the consumption of a large quantity of paracetamol tablets. Tests are being conducted, and we will better know about her health condition in two days, he added.

Taking the case seriously, Police Commissioner NS Megharikh has ordered a probe into the leadership of DCP Sandeep Patil. The Commissioner has also submitted a four-page primary investigation report to Home Minister G Parameshwara.

The report also has details on the working of Inspector Sanjeev Gowda and PSI Roopa and the dairies maintained by both the officers, said sources.

Meanwhile, the Women’s Commission has filed a voluntary case in this regard.
