The never-ending saga of Ola and Uber ride-sharing services in Karnataka is likely to get elongated. As the State government is awaiting Centre’s take on how to make these services legal, the 15-day deadline is likely to get extended. For the time being, the ride-sharing services from the app-based cab aggregators are continuing in the city of Bengaluru.

If the deadline gets extended, this move by the State government will bring smiles on the faces of thousands of commuters who avail these services on daily basis in the Silicon Valley of India. The Transport Commissioner of Karnataka MK Aiyappa confirmed that they are seeking legal opinion from the Centre.

“If the legal opinion is received in the next five days, we can take action, else we will see what action can be taken closer to the deadline,” Aiyappa was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

Prior to this, Aiyappa had initially given a three-day deadline to stop the cab-sharing services to the aggregators in the city. However, the representatives from the respective companies requested the Transport Commissioner to come up with rules which would allow them to operate ride-sharing services legally.

Based on this request Transport Commissioner has sought clarification from the Centre so that they can bend the rules a little and allow Uber and Ola to run these services.

“We expect to hear from the Union government soon and we can then act on introducing these services legally. This matter has legal implications and we are waiting for clarification on a few questions we had on the same,” a senior official opined.
