CPM, CPI spar over Athirapally power project in the state

The 'honeymoon period' of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government has hardly taken off and the differences between the two biggest allies are out in the open.

A statement by the Electricity Minister Kadakampally Surendran that hydel power project like Athirapally and gas-based Chemmeni project will be implemented has kicked off a storm in the front, with the CPI, the second biggest coalition partner opposing the move.

Speaking to Asianet News, the Minister said that considering the state's progress and the demand for more electricity, both the projects are important and they will be executed after clearing all environment related concerns.

The minister's statement was met with strong criticism by CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran who said before making announcements on controversial topics ministers must make sure that they are discussed in the front and should abstain from topics that are not mentioned in the LDF manifesto.

VS Sunil Kumar, the Agriculture minister also supported the CPI leader's stand saying that minister should not change their stance without discussing it in the front.

However, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was quick to support Electricity Minister, ruling out any apprehensions over the Athirappally and Chemmeni power projects. Vijayan said the projects will not hinder the flow of water and there was no cause of worry and minister's are free to talk about the departments they are in charge of.
