CPM BJP end political violence in Kannur

The all-party meet chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan resolved to take measures for a violence-free Kannur, the district that is famous for political killings. Leaders concluded that most incidents of violence are perpetrated by a section of people and public must isolate them from society.

"The leaders have reached a consensus to resort peace in the district. They said most incidents of violence did not have the support of party leadership. Public and party must isolate people participating in violence," the Chief Minister said.

Though all peace meetings in the past have raised hope, but permanent peace remains an illusion for the public as bloodshed continued. However, this time Sangh Parivar, as well as CPM, were unequivocal about taking measures to ensure peace and it is a testimony of the optimistic mood generated at the meet.

"We are happy that the Chief Minister himself took the initiative to end the bloodshed. Our party is committed to ensuring peace and has demanded Vijayan to guarantee that the police act independently without bias," Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national executive member P K Krishnadas said.

Meanwhile, CPM district secretary P Jayrajan promised the meeting that party would not support its workers engaging in incidents of violence and assured support to all peace proposals by the Chief Minister. He also urged other parties to condemn incidents of violence and requested collective efforts from their side to maintain peace in the district.

Though a single peace meet is not likely to mark the end of political violence in the state, the optimism shown by leaders is expected to impart a significant change in the way leaders of various parties are responding to the escalating situation.
