Tamil Nadu couple arrested for murdering daughter-in-law

Couple arrested for murdering daughter-in-law

Sumathi and Santosh fell in love and got married in 2008 without their parent’s consent.

Four years later, Sumathi’s parent’s finally accepted their union and arranged for a reception in 2012.  The couple moved to Thillaipuram in Namakkal where Santosh worked as an assistant manager for a private bank.  A month ago, Santosh was transferred to Hosur, when he called his wife on June 20, several calls went unanswered. Concerned about her whereabouts he called his colleagues to check on her.   When they reached her house, they found a dead Sumathi lying in a pool of blood.

Sumathi’s father lodged a complaint at the police station accusing Santosh’s family. The police registered a case under Section 380 and 302 and picked up Santosh and his family for further questioning.

The enquiry revealed shocking details. Santosh’s parents were dead against the inter-community marriage and pretended to accept the nuptial to gain easy access to Sumathi.  They approached their son and his wife saying they wanted to conduct a reception too like Sumathi’s parents earlier had.

Once Santosh had left for his job at Hosur, his parents visited the couple’s home and slit Sumathi’s throat with a knife.  His parents then took some of her gold jewellery and her mobile phones to make it look like a robbery gone wrong.

The police, however, got suspicious when they received contradictory statements from the parents about the planned wedding reception.  The parents have been arrested  and lodged at a prison in Salem.
