Coolie by profession, robber by desperation

A 32-year-old coolie took up burglary as his second 'job' when he couldn't make enough money to meet the needs of his two families.

Murali was caught stealing a Honda Dio scooter from a hotel near Mantri Mall in Bengaluru on July 5. Close to 25 vehicles worth ₹15 lakh were seized by the police.

According to a news report in Bangalore Mirror, the police said, "He had an interesting modus operandi. He travelled by a BMTC bus one way and rode back with a stolen bike," said the police.

"He repeated the act as often as possible whenever he visited his wives. Murali had managed to steal and sell over 25 bikes from different areas in the city. He had made stealing bikes his second profession."

The Sheshadripuram police confirmed that Murali had no partners and was working alone.

The police said, "Murali confessed to his crimes. He said he had to look after two families as he is married to two women. When his wives questioned him about the bikes, he always said that they belonged to his friends."

With Murali in custody, the police have cracked down 22 similar cases registered in Sheshadripuram, Malleshwaram, Vyalikaval, High Grounds, Wilson Garden, Kalasipalya, Halasuru, JP Nagar, Upparpet, Cottonpet and Jeevan Bima Nagar police stations.

According to the police, Murali would use a duplicate key to unlock the vehicles and then drove them to his home. Later, he would lend these scooters to his friends before selling them. A case under section 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against Murali."
