Cauvery unrest: Hyderabad police issues advisory to TV channels

  • Forbids TV channels from airing any inciteful content.
  • Threatens to prosecute the violaters of program code under section 16 of The Cable TV Networks (Regulation) Act 1995.

In the light of the unrest in Karnataka over the Cauvery water dispute with Tamil Nadu, on Tuesday the Hyderabad police issued an advisory to all cable TV channels and cable TV network operators asking them not transmit any program that is likely to incite violence or contains anything against maintenance of law and order.

 

According to the ANI report, the advisory firmly requested all TV Channels to adhere to program code in interest of maintenance of public order/peace in Hyderabad.

 

"It has been brought to the notice of the Authorized Officer under The Cable TV Networks (Regulation) Act 1995, that visuals having huge potential for inciting mob violence which relate to the ongoing violence in Bangalore City are being transmitted/retransmitted through the Cable TV Networks in Hyderabad City," the advisory said, ANI reported.

 

The Hyderabad police advisory also said that the concerned Managements are liable for prosecution for violation of program code under section 16 of the said Act.

 

"The concerned Channels violating the Program Code are liable to be prohibited from transmission in public interest under section 19 of the said Act. In view of the large congregations of people expected on account of ongoing Bakrid and Ganesh Festivities in Hyderabad City, the managements of all the TV Channels/ Cable TV Network Operators are requested/advised to adhere to program code in the interest of maintenance of public order and peace in Hyderabad City," the advisory added, according to ANI.

 

The advisory was issued by the orders of the Hyderabad police commissioner.
