7, 200 bullets disappear from strong room of special police camp

Kerala police is now probing into a rare case, missing of 7, 200 bullets from the safe of Special Armed Police (SAP) camp at Peroorkada in Thiruvananthapuram. This was understood during an internal inquiry into another similar case, where 400 bullets that were issued to a new batch of recruits went missing. 
 

The officers had taken the rifle rounds along with them to the MSP firing range in Melmuri in Malappuram, for training. The bullets went missing on the way and state police chief ordered a probe into the incident. A four-member board was formed to inquire about the incident and to recover the ammunition. Missing bullets are the ones used in 7.62 mm Russian-made sniper rifle used by police. 
 

The team headed by State Industrial Security Force Commandant found that more shots are missing from the closely guarded safe room at the camp, reports Manorama Online. 
 

Weapons and ammunition for the police are supplied from Central Weapon Store in Rampur in Uttar Pradesh and ordnance factories under Ministry of Defence. Usually bullets are delivered in two types of containers, that carry 400 and 600 bullets each. 

The new batch of recruits were allotted two cases of 600 bullets. As they arrived the camp, a routine checkup was carried out, and it was found that the boxes contained only 800 bullets instead of 1,200. 
 

On inquiry it was found that another 2, 000 bullets were missing from the store at SAP camp at Peroorkada. Following this a special board of inquiry was formed and investigation revealed that 7, 200 bullets were missing from the store.
