BMTC to get 3000 new buses not reducing fares

Recently, more than 150 citizens and volunteers of Citizens for Bengaluru and Bengaluru Bus Prayanikars Vedike from around the city travelled to Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) headquarters located in Shantinagar to demand more buses and also reducing the fares to half.

The volunteers holding placards and bus models raised slogans and continued the Bus Bhagya Beku protest. The group submitted a petition to BBMP MD Ekroop Caur stating their demands.

Caur assured that the petition will be forwarded to higher authorities and disclosed that BMTC has already written to the state government requesting for procuring about 3000 new buses. The transport authority is also adding 1650 new buses in this year many of which will be replacing scrapped buses and old buses.

About the fares, the MD stated that since the fares have not been raised in the last couple of years, it would be difficult to reduce them.

Bus Bhagya Beku is an initiative by the Citizens for Bengaluru (CfB) who successfully led the campaign to scrap the steel flyover plan. About the new initiative, Srinivas Alavilli of Citizens for Bengaluru stated that the state government now must focus on improving public transport.
