Bengaluru top cop says it's 'ok' to drink and drive, why is it shocking?
- A lot of trolls and easily-offended people have said that the top cop was endorsing alcoholism and drinking and driving under the influence of alcohol
Praveen Sood, Commissioner of Police, tweeted on his timeline regarding drinking and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Needless to say, people immediately took up cudgels against the top cop’s message issued in public interest. A lot of trolls and easily-offended people have said that the top cop was endorsing alcoholism and drinking and driving under the influence of alcohol.
What the police chief was actually doing was setting the record straight for those people who feel they are being unjustly caught or fined by the traffic policemen.
Previously, in an article Sood had mentioned his views on the alcometer and breath-analyzer test. He said, “What’s most disappointing are instances of non-drinkers complaining of harassment on being checked. In fact, the whole process is more for the safety of those who never drink and drive but still become victims of somebody else’s misadventure.”

All in all, what the public needs to keep in mind is that next time a traffic cop stops for checking your alcohol consumption while riding or driving – cooperate and do not panic, swerve, speed away if you are well within the prescribed limit. Any rash behaviour can result in loss of life or injury to fellow commuters or passersby.
He is no way saying that one must drink and drive, because advising the public on their preferences and vices is not something that comes under his ambit of work. Applauding the top cop we too would like to emphasise that it is better to not drink and drive at all in the first place.
