According to aTimes of India report, the Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has expressed hope that the IT capital might get a US consulate soon.

MEA Minister Swaraj assured BJP state president BS Yeddyurappa that there is a probability that Bengaluru might be considered for a new consulate as the city has developed strong economic and social links with the US.

According to Swaraj, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s last US visit, both the governments had expressed interest in opening new consulates in each other’s country.

While India might pick Seattle for opening its new consulate, US will pick the new office after consultation with the Indian government.

Every year hundreds of IT and other professionals and students travel to the US for business or on student's visa.

Earlier Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had also urged US delegations visiting the city to open a consulate.

It may be noted that in South India, US consulates are already operational in Chennai and Hyderabad.
