A six-year-old girl who went missing four days ago was found raped and murdered at her neighbour's house. The incident happened on Sunday evening in the Girinagar police limits. The accused is said to have burnt the girl's body after raping and murdering her.

The brutal, cold-blooded murder came to light when foul smell started emanating from Anil's house who lived next to the girl's house. His house was locked and so the neighbours broke open the door to discover Harshitha's body in a burnt state.

Harshitha, a resident of Janashakthi Nagar in Hosakerehalli was a student of class 1 and was missing on Thursday. Her daily-wage labourer parents- Shivakumar and Saraswathi-lodged a missing complaint that very night, unable to find her.

The police said, "Prima facie, it appears to be a case of rape and murder. The accused has burnt the body and packed it in a carton box before fleeing. It is yet to be ascertained how he murdered the girl, as the body is burnt. Investigations revealed that Anil, a daily wager hailing from Kalaburagi, had told his neighbours that he is going to his hometown to bring his wife back. He left on Wednesday and has not yet returned. We have formed teams to trace him and are investigating whether any other person is involved in the crime". Further investigations are being conducted.
