Aussie police say Keralite man was poisoned by wife and lover

Losing a child is like losing the center of your life. Ten months back, Abraham of Punalur in Kollam and his wife were devastated at the news of their son Sam Abraham's untimely death in Melbourne. Today, they are completely distraught by the reports that their son was poisoned by their daughter-in-law Sofi and her paramour.

“We were always suspicious of Sofi, wife of Sam, but thought it would be inappropriate to say anything because it would have spoiled relationships," says Abraham, who is in a complete state of shock.

Sam Abraham, 33, an employee with UAE exchange, died on 14 October 2015 at his Epping home in Melbourne, two days after he returned to Australia after a short vacation to his family home in Punalur.  Sofi informed the news of the demise and said her husband passed away following a silent cardiac arrest. Sam's mortal remains were flown to Kerala. His funeral was held at Marthoma Church in Punalur where Sam and Sofi exchanged vows, years back following a long love affair. After a few days of mourning, Sofi went back to Melbourne with their four year old child.

After ten months of sophisticated covert investigations, Australian police found that Sam was poisoned and zeroed in on Sofi and her lover Arun for plotting his murder. The duo was arrested last week and produced before court.

The Australian police grew suspicious of Sam's death when they learned about a failed murder attempt on Sam months before his death. Phone calls between Sofi and her paramour Arun were also key to unraveling the murder mystery.

But now relatives of Sam feel that the young man might have had a premonition about his death as he had told them that his next trip to home would be in a coffin and expressed his wish to be buried beside his grandfather. Sam had also hinted that not everything was well between him and Sofi. However, they never expected that Sofi would go this far to eliminate her husband.

Both Sofi and Arun were produced before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court. The magistrate has granted investigators extra time to transcribe phone conversations and prepare evidence. The pair was later remanded to reappear for a committal mention on February 13 next year.

The murder has drawn parallels to the murder of Udupi businessman Bhaskar Shetty, who was allegedly murdered by his wife Rajeshwari and the couple's son Navneeth. The duo later burnt his corpse in a Homa Kunda, with the help of Niranjan Bhat, the alleged lover of Rajeshwari.
