Assault on Mollywood actress sparks war of words in Left front

The abduction and assault of Mollywood actress have sparked another war of words between the CPM and CPI, the major partners in the Left Democratic Government in Kerala, with the latter hinting that the home department failed to ensure the safety of women.

The abduction of the actress shows that women are not safe in the state, CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran said.

The CPI leader's statement came out at a time when the CPM  termed it an 'isolated incident.' By calling it an isolated incident, CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan was trying to defend the government from the accusations that it failed to maintain law and order in the state.

The Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala was quick to grab the opportunity to attack the government for its failure to check goondas, assault on women and political murders.

Interestingly, the sharpest response to the CPM secretary came from former CPI state secretary Pannyan Raveendran. It can not be called an isolated incident, he said. "The unfortunate thing is that the so-called isolated incidents are getting repeated frequently in the state," he added. If police officers defy government policy, they should be removed with immediately, he demanded.

The relationship between the CPM and CPI has never been smooth since the LDF government assumed power in May last year. The recent students'agitation at Kerala Law Academy saw the students and youth wings of both parties trading charges while the CPI ministers openly defied the Chief Minister regarding the investigation into the alleged misuse of public land assigned to the academy.
