Dravida Munnetra Katchi (DMK) supremo Muthuvel Karunanidhi has been facing severe health issues for some time now. Not surprising considering his age - just eight shy of a century at 92.

However, strong rumours from sources indicate that Karunanidhi directed his family not to admit him to Apollo Hospital, where the former Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa breathed her last on December 5.

"There was little apprehension to come to Apollo hospital when arch rival Jayalalithaa was under treatment. And after her death in Apollo Hospital on December 5, Karunanidhi asked his family members take to some other private hospital and not Apollo. Hence he was rushed to Kauvery Hospital," said a source.

The aged politician, who complained about breathing difficulties, was readmitted to Kauvery Hospital for the second time this week, after an earlier admission on December 1.

Karunanidhi has a lung and throat infection. The doctors treating him have performed a tracheotomy to help him breathe without difficulty.

The team of doctors, headed by Aravindan Selvaraj, executive director of the hospital, are monitoring his health closely and say that his condition is stable.

"The DMK patriarch is on antibiotics, and he is responding well to the line of treatment," said Dr Aravindan Selvaraj in a press release.

The party is hoping that their leader will come back soon to chair the general body meeting of the party on December. He is likely to announce the elevation of his son MK Stalin as the DMK Working President.
