Anju episode: Pinarayi Vijayan defends minister

Anju Bobby George

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has defended his cabinet colleague EP Jayarajan, who allegedly behaved rudely to Olympian Anju Bobby George.

Sports Minister Jayarajan did not misbehave with Anju. He only made some comments on her air travel borne by the government, the Chief Minister said. "I don't find it an act of shaming," he said.

The previous government had given the Olympian many allowances including the air fare as State Sports Council President. The Minister told her that it was not fair, Vijayan explained.  The Chief Minister confirmed that Anju visited him and that he told her the government did not consider her a politician.

Anju had met the Chief Minister shortly after the controversial meeting with the Sports Minister and complained to him about the incident.

Jayarajan had denied having scolding the long jumper at his office. The meeting was cordial and Anju had returned happy, he claimed.

Meanwhile, state Congress president VM Sudheeran criticised the Sports Minister and wanted the Chief Minister to correct his colleague.
Congress leader K Sudhakaran said that Jayarajan was a shame on Kerala.

Jayarajan should apologise to the Olympian and to the state, said Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala.

The minister has lost his right to remain in the post, said former Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan.
