Kerala nursing student attempts suicide; principal, teachers booked

Adoor nursing student attempt suicide teachers booked

Even as the state is yet to come out of the shock of the news that a nursing student was brutally ragged and forced to drink cleaning lotion at a college in Karnataka, another nursing student tried to commit suicide alleging mental torture by teachers at a college in Pathanamthitta district. The police have registered a case against the authorities and four teachers of Mount Zion Nursing College at Adoor in the district in connection with the incident.

Supriya, a native of Vadakekkara in Pathanapuram attempted suicide by taking an overdose of sleeping pills on Friday after returning from college on Friday. The girl is admitted to Pushpagiri Medical College and is reported to be in a critical condition.

Family members of the student alleged that the principal and teachers subjected the girl to mental torture after her father Suseelan questioned some steps taken by college principal in the Parent's and Teacher's Association meeting.

The police action was, however, based on the information passed on to them from the Medical College hospital where the girl is undergoing treatment. "The girl consumed pills after some issues with the teachers. We have registered a case against the college principal and four teachers. Further action will be taken after investigation," Pathanapuram Sub-inspector Rahul Raveendran said.

Meanwhile, the college authorities suspended three teachers who allegedly threatened to take action against the student after she failed to attend clinical training.
