About 508 contract teachers with BBMP not paid salary for three months

Contract teachers working with BBMP schools in different areas said that they have been sacrificing years in BBMP hoping to get permanent statuses has not yielded any results and their salaries are also held for months.

Although both Central and state governments do their chest thumping act during budget as they would have announced financial assistance to improve education in government and corporation schools, but the delay in execution and file movement from one department to another, weakens the system.

The BBMP contract teachers association said that the BBMP had earlier called for appointments of 301 teachers in 154 schools and college but the officials struck down the appointment process by saying it has no fund to give salary. And hence they started recruiting teachers on contract basis from human resource agency.

"These agency do not care about the home conditions, they will not do the foot-work to collect the work details from education officers of BBMP to speed up the salary process and even if they do so, the BBMP officials are lazy to sign files pertaining to salary, as a result we have not got salary from last three months,” said Chandrakala, a teacher at Tasker Town Primary School.

Echoing similar sentiments Kuppanna, a high school teacher said his salary of Rs 8,500 is a lifeline for his family any delay in monthly salary will push them into debts.

"First they delayed our regularisation process and now the issue of delay in monthly salary is making us feel regret of joining BBMP schools,” he said.

As BBMP has about 70 percent of vacancies in permanent staff category, 81 teachers from the BBMP contract teachers association had approached the high court last year and the court directed the state government to immediately appoint the teachers to BBMP schools.

"We have given 59 percent result in SSCL for BBMP schools, a 12 percent more than government schools. Most of the teachers have served for 10 years. As there was pressure, the government has directed the recruitment commission to process the appointment of 81 teachers. Now, the files are pending with BBMP commissioner and by 29 they should release our appointment letters,” said a senior teacher from the association.

The association members hope that their inconvenience of delay in salaries from Crystal Info Agency also will be solved if BBMP regularises their service.

BBMP Mayor, G Padmavathi who agreed on the grave situation the families of BBMP contract teachers said that the teachers association went behind few leaders hoping they will get them appointed and wasted their time and energy as the leaders do not understand the technical process in the appointments. The appointment will surely happen as the BBMP has already begun the process.

"Meanwhile the BBMP has decided to give them a hike of Rs 5,000 to make their salaries on par with regular staff. Soon these teachers will get become permanent staff," she said.

The mayor also assured the salary to BBMP contractor teachers will also be given on time from next month.
