Lavanya, an 8th standard student stages a hunger strike demanding toilets be constructed in her village Her kin was recently killed by a wild elephant when she went into the fields to relieve herself Lavanya has been inspired by Mallamma of Koppal whose protest for a toilet had gained recognition by the PM

Recently Mallamma, a class 10 student from Dhanapur village in Koppala district staged a hunger strike demanding a toilet be constructed in her house, her efforts even gained mention in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Man ki Baat’.

Inspired by her, Lavanya from Hemadala village, Hiriyuru Taluk, Chitradurga district, Karnataka has now begun an indefinite hunger strike demanding that toilets be constructed in each and every household in her village.

But Mallamma isn’t the only reason the instigated the standard 8 student to go on a hunger strike for toilets, her relative Timmakka, a resident of the neighbouring Belaghatta village in the same district, was recently killed by a wild elephant when she had gone into the fields to answer nature’s call.

This isn’t the first time Lavanya has taken up a social cause, earlier, she had also marched from her village to Vidhana Soudha urging the government to help put an end to farmer’s suicide. This time around she has resolved to make her village free from open toilet and we hope the government pay heed to her plea.
