It is freedom calling for 284 prisoners in various jails of Karnataka as they will be released from the jail-life on the occasion of the Independence Day

Out of 284 inmates, 48 are women and 120 of them are from central jail in Parappana Agrahara, alone.

Speaking about the release, a senior police officer has said that a list of prisoners who have at least completed 14 years of imprisonment and shown good behaviour has been sent to the government.

The release process is being conducted according to the directions of the Supreme Court. The inmates will be released today.

Veerappan associates released

Brigand and dacoit Veerappan’s associates were released from Mysuru jail after being in jail for 14 years. Siddan alias Tupaki Siddan, Anburaj, Tangaraju and Appuswamy were released from the jail on Monday. They were charged with supplying food and other important tools to Veerappan. They were sentenced to life term. STF police had killed Veerappan in 2004 in an encounter.

New directions

The state government has formed new rules based on the direction of the Supreme Court. Accordingly, to be eligible for release, men should have completed 14 years of imprisonment and it is 10 years for women.

Those in jail for terrorism charges are not considered for release, sources said.
