As many as 12 CPM workers sustained stab injuries, seven of them seriously, after they were attacked allegedly by Muslim League Workers at Tanoor in Malappuram in the wee hours on Monday.  Tension is prevailing in the area amidst fears of an escalation of violence.

The CPM is observing hartal in Niramarathur Panchayat following the incident. Tension was prevailing in the panchayat, which is notorious for CPM-Mulsim League clashes in the past, in connection with a sevens football tournament organised by a pro-CPM arts and sports club in the locality.

After the match on Sunday evening, CPM workers kept guard on the ground overnight fearing that the rival party workers might destroy the field. They were sleeping in the field when a group of men attacked them with swords around 2.30 a.m on Monday.

The injured have been shifted to Medical College in Kozhikode. The condition of seven CPM workers is reportedly very serious. Police have heightened vigil in the area after the incident.
