Mentally ill woman saves ₹1.1 lakh begging on the streets

1 lakh with mentally ill woman on street

It took more than two hours for the panchayat officials and DYFI leaders to count the money with Deedi, a woman whom they saved from the street. She had saved Rs 1.11 lakh in the sacks she often carried with her.

The riches came to light when the police decided to help her along with another woman called Prameela, who was also living on the street.

Deedi, a migrant in a mentally unstable condition, was living on the streets of Vadanappally for several years. She often cooked food on the street side. The ailing woman saved whatever money people gave her. Her bag consisted of coins, notes, and foreign currency.

On seeing her plight the police decided to help her and approached the court seeking permission. Following this, police officials along with panchayat authorities and DYFI workers decided to take her to the hospital. Before shifting her they checked the sack she often carried with her and found bundles of 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 notes and coins along with some foreign currency.

As many as 16 persons began counting the money at 5 pm and finished by 7.30 pm.

Deedi and Prameela were produced before the court and was then taken to Thrissur Mental Hospital.

The amount will be deposited in the bank till Deedi is back from the hospital.
