Bengaluru: A complaint has been filed against veterinarians of an NGO after a puppy died due to a botched animal birth control surgery. The NGO is linked with the animal welfare department of the BBMP.

30-year-old Rakesh Gupta was the caretaker of the pup, named Julie. He claimed that she died due to “carelessness” while performing the surgery.

Rakesh Gupta resides in Abhaya Reddy Layout, 7th Cross, near Kaggadasapura. Julie often slept in front of their apartment and Rakesh and his wife would regularly feed her.

Last month, the NGO, Sushma Enterprises took Julie from Kaggadasapura to perform an animal birth control surgery. Few days after Julie’s return, Rakesh noticed that Julie looked unwell. After taking her to the veterinarian, he was made aware that Julie’s liver was damaged during the birth-control surgery. She had suffered excess bleeding during the procedure.

Julie died on April 14, due to multiple organ failure

Rakesh Gupta then approached animal activist Naveena Kamath, who said that this is not unheard of. She reportedly said that a similar kind of mishap had occurred last year as well. She added that many stray dogs have died due to sterilization by veterinarians of Sushma Enterprises. She also filed a complaint against the doctor, Aruna Reddy and other doctors of the NGO.

Last year, a case was registered at Kadugodi Police Station against Aruna Reddy and three other doctors based on a complaint filed by another animal activist. The animal activist claimed that a dog had expired after undergoing a similar surgery.

Baiyappanahalli Police have registered an FIR against Aruna Reddy and other veterinary doctors under Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and section 428 (mischief by killing or maiming animal) of the IPC.
